Volunteer for health research projects in Flatbush.
If you’d like to be considered for a research project related to diabetes, pain, or heart health:
Health research studies look for better ways to prevent, detect, and care for diabetes, heart disease, and other medical issues.
When people from Brooklyn and nearby neighborhoods volunteer to help research studies, doctors can learn if new care options work for everyone, including people like you.
Being a part of these studies (which are sometimes called "clinical trials") is always voluntary.
Research studies are required to know if there are new and better ways to manage diabetes, pain, and heart issues. This can help doctors find better care.
You also:
Get health checks & screenings for no cost
Meet doctors who listen to your concerns
Help ensure doctors include people from your community are included in health research
Safety always comes first. Always.
Research teams follow strict rules set by medical experts and people outside of Brooklyn Clinical Research and companies who have asked us to run the study.
Every program is reviewed by a special safety committee to protect you.
You get complete information about what to expect before volunteering and you can ask as many questions as you need.
Your personal information stays private and secure.
If you volunteer:
Regular check-ups monitor your health
You can stop at any time - no questions asked
Our team understands the unique health concerns in our Brooklyn neighborhoods and works to make sure everyone feels comfortable and protected. Joining is completely your choice - we respect your decision either way.
We'll review your answers to see if our current health program might work for you. If it looks like a match:
1. We'll call you with more details
2. You decide if you want to see if you qualify to volunteer for a research study today
3. If you want, we'll ask some more questions and maybe schedule some tests
You might not qualify for the research studies we are working on today. If you agree, we can keep your info on file and contact you about new studies in the future.
Currently, we’re looking for volunteers for 2 specific projects:
1. People with a certain type of pain related to diabetes.
2. Certain types of people who are more likely to get heart disease.
We run new research studies all the time, so if you’re interested, we can keep an eye out for future research studies that could be a good fit for you.
Volunteers with diabetic nerve pain can talk to our staff and do some tests to confirm they meet all the requirements to volunteer for the study.
Those who officially volunteer and start will:
- Complete several short visits at our office in Flatbush over 3 months
- Have regular health check-ups at no cost
- Try either a new pain management option, today's common option, or one that doesn't actively manage diabetic nerve pain
- Answer questions about pain levels and daily activities
This program compares two ways to prevent heart problems in high-risk adults.
Who can join:
- Men over 55 or women over 65
- Must have type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, or metabolic syndrome
- No existing heart disease or kidney problems
Volunteers will:

Brooklynites and New Yorkers are different from people in other locations doing clinical studies:
Our weather is different. We have more cultural diversity. Our food is different.
Those, or many other, things might affect how a new test or drug works -- even if in really small ways.
But to know these things, we need all types of people from places like ours involved in research.
Brooklyn Clinical Research is dedicated to advancing medicine through increased access
to clinical research.
We're based in Flatbush, near SUNY Downstate and King's County Hospital. Our clinical offices are close to the Q train, 2/5 trains, and the B44/B44 SBS bus.
